The business of FREE EDUCATION in Jamaica

11 07 2007

One of the Jamaica Labour Party’s “sales” pitch is this issue of education being free for all. Now let me just dispel this myth. Education is NOT free. The taxpayers of Jamaica are the ones who bear the costs of education for its citizenry. The question is “Should it really be free?”. My answer is NO!

Think of something you have recently received for free. Do you take care of it or nurture it in the same way you have as something you had to pay for? I doubt highly that you have. Cost sharing gives the stakeholders a sense of deep interest in what they are paying for. With a trade deficit of nearly one trillion Jamaican dollars and our debt servicing, we simply cannot afford to pay 100% for education. What are these parents doing? If they couldn’t afford it why bother to have so many children? This is what I mean when I say that we have this “careless” way of living, followed by a culture of “learned helplessness”.

Freeness threatens the quality of education our children will be receiving. Why can’t people understand that? I listened to two talk shows today while I was on the road and everyone wants to know how it will be financed. Why is it that Bruce Golding cannot tell the nation HOW he is going to finance secondary education 100%. Let us assess whether or not his plan is solid!

Perhaps his time would be better spent promoting a “two child per family” policy, or some sort of “heated sex” policy! Taxpayers are tired of this BS where we have to foot the bill for the careless and irresponsible and then the political parties turn into a sales pitch!

By the way, I have noticed that NO MENTION has been made by the JLP of the fate of TERTIARY LEVEL students….I would have thought that since they are in the voting population, some light could be shed on the future of tertiary education as they say they will only finance secondary education 100%!

Also, is there some study I don’t know about that shows a positive relationship where the reduction of fees leads to brighter students?
