Edward Seaga explains….
15 07 2007I couldn’t help but read Mr. Seaga’s column in today’s Jamaica Gleaner entitled “Campaign Strategy and Voting Preference”. To be honest, my love for the JLP died the day they found a way to kick out Mr. Seaga…he was the last sensible person the party ever had. As John Maxwell said in his article in the Observer:
“In attempting to assert his supreme authority, Seaga shrank his own party’s leaders into political pygmies who offered no challenge either to him or to the PNP”
I remember in the 1980s that no Minister of Goverment ever addressed the nation but Mr. Seaga. I can only attribute this to the fact that had the others addressed the nation, it would have been quite embarrasing! Oh well….they kicked the man out of the very party he helped to build.
So Eddie’s article today gave me some insight to how people in Jamaica choose their candidates. He sheds light on the reason why we will never hear parties deal with the REAL issues upfront. As Seaga states:
“..Language has to be tailored to the level of understanding of the people. This means using catchphrases, buzzwords and street language. Automatically, this determines what type of subjects can be addressed. It rules out complex arguments on issues, unless the arguments are down to their simplest common denominators”
This article is really worth reading. Now I understand why it suits both parties to “keep back” the electorate at large so that there is no need to feel as if there is some reason to explain anything too complicated…my view.
