Battle of the Airwaves

1 08 2007

For a few weeks now, the Jamaica Labour Party and the Peoples National Party have produced some commercials which have been quite entertaining. If the truth be told, the JLP has won the election with their “in your face” campaign ads. I have even practised the chorus “Jamaica needs a change now”. I can actually recite the various versions by heart, including the “not changing no course”. The JLP has really been innovative and they have been maximising modern day technology with their use of You Tube and posting ring tones for downloads on their web site. The ring tones are concise, catchy and audible. Even the anthem is clear. Their website is loaded with video clips of of the party’s every move.

The PNP’s commercials have a tendency to focus on Portia. I guess this is because they know that without her, they wouldn’t stand a chance. She is still the most popular politician to date. They have highlighted their achievements with a “rising sun” backdrop, which gives you the impression we are on the right track. Multimillion dollar investments, job creation….you name it, they have published it. The website on the other hand, needs a little help. To start with, the songs are too long to download to the cell phone. I tried doing it on my phone and after 5 minutes, one song was downloaded and then I couldn’t save it…file too big. Personally I think they need to cut some of them into 30 minute jingles. Even their anthem sounds like it is coming straight from the old time record player….scratches and all. They haven’t posted any videos yet, so I can’t comment. Maybe the JLP is doing some marketing for them…I don’t know….because all I can hear from their tones is Portia’s voice saying “not changing no course”. I may just download it and answer the phone after I hear “not changing no course”.

Let’s not forget the You Tube guys who support the JLP. They have come up with some creative ways to “diss” the PNP. Oh what a season!

Bruce…is not that I don’t support you, I just don’t like some of the people you have around you. Maybe if you get rid of them I may have a change of heart. You have a vision but some of those people help to distort that vision!
